2.10
(1)(g) There are no boundaries of any National Natural Landmarks, Designated
Natural Areas or public parks within the permit or adjacent areas. The King
Mine site has two structures that may be eligible for listing. They are the
power plant and the old mine hoist house. The town site of Bowie has four
structures that may be eligible for listing. They are the mine office, Bowie
house garage and two mine garages. The eligible structures are shown on
maps in the Cultural Resources Inventory Report presented in Volume VI.
One prehistoric site was identified within the permit area. It is identified as
site 5DT1050. This site is a small prehistoric open lithic scatter located on a
pinyon juniper wooded ridge spine at elevation 6080. The site overlooks a
deeply cut drainage that contains the powder house for the old King Mine.
The site was field evaluated as not eligible. The site is shown on maps in the
Cultural Resources Inventory Report presented in Volume VI.
In September 2013, Grand River Institute conducted the recording of an
additional feature, a stone wall, within the original site boundary at 5DT 1053,
the King Mine. The wall is visible on a 1930 photograph of the town of Bowie
and at some point had become completely buried in coal tailings and was
concealed at the time of the original site recording. The feature was recently
discovered due to work on a drainage ditch below the feature that exposed
the wall. No further work was recommended with regard to this site.
Three sites in the Spruce Stomp Lease area, 5DT96, 5DT698 and 5DT1719
have been officially deemed eligible for listing on the National Register of
Historic Places by the State Historic Preservation Officer and protection and
preservation are recommended. The following discussion of the three sites
is obtained from Grand River Institute's Class III cultural resource inventory
of the Spruce Stomp coal lease area. (GRI Project No. 2012 -10920
November 2012)
Site 5DT96 was originally recorded by Steve Baker and Pat Flanigan of
Centuries Research in 1977 (Baker 1977). It was described as the Jess
Barrow Homestead — a 20th century, seasonal, high - altitude subsistence
homestead and /or cow camp (Baker 1977). The cabin is located on the north
PR-14 2.10-3- 03/14
