2.04.7 Hydrology Description
Gulch could be damaged by subsidence cracks which could cause surface
flow to run into the mine below. Approximately 1,500 feet of overburden
where the mine passes under Stevens Gulch will mitigate and minimize
subsidence effects. See more detailed discussion for both creeks in section
2.05.6(6).
In the eastern section of the permit area domestic use of water in the permit
and adjacent area is derived from wells completed in the Mancos shale or
alluvial river deposits. This ground water is located geologically at least 800
feet below the coal seam to be mined. Considering the vertical separation
and the impervious shales between the coal seam to be mined and the
domestic wells, it is virtually certain that the mine operations will not have an
adverse effect on the domestic wells in the adjacent area.
On the west side of the permit boundary and adjacent area to the north
domestic use of water is derived from Steven's Gulch alluvium.
Map 23 - Water Rights Location shows map codes 7 and 8 are associated
with the reclaimed Blue Ribbon Mine. Map code 7 is for the Blue Ribbon
Well which has been sealed. Map code 7 is also for the Blue Ribbon Ditch
which has been abandoned. Map code 8 is for the Blue Ribbon Reservoir
No. 1 which was been reclaimed. Neither of these water rights are within the
projected angle of draw of the proposed mine workings.
Water right numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11,14, 15 and 32 as shown on Map 23
are owned by the applicant. Water rights 70, 74, 75, and 76 are outside of
the angle of draw. Water right 71 Stratton Springs, within the angle of draw,
is owned by the Turkey Track Ranch. It corresponds to monitoring point
Spring 1 -3 and is 1,475 feet above the mine workings.
All of the applicants water rights except number 6 have been mined under.
There has not been any reported damage to any of the applicant's water
rights.
Water right 72 is for the Pitkin Mesa Pipeline. Protection measures for the
Pitkin Mesa Pipeline are detailed in Section 2.05.6(6).
The Hughes family and or Red Hughes owns water rights 13, 16 and 62
described as follows:
PR -14 2.04-59- 06/14
