Greg Lewicki
Page 2
November 3, 2014
5. The Applicant has stated that water will be produced as a result of the proposed drilling
operation. Please describe the groundwater resources in the area and identify any aquifers
which may be penetrated during the proposed drilling operation.
6. The Applicant has stated the existing water in the mine flows through a ditch in the main
drift and will not be disturbed. Please describe the measures which will be taken to avoid
impacts to the existing water in the mine. In addition, specify if water is present in only the
main drift or if water can be found in all of the mine drifts where drilling will be occurring.
7. The Applicant has stated that the drill holes will be sealed with grout to prevent any new
discharge points within the mine. Please describe the timing between completion of a drill
hole and the sealing of a drill hole.
8. Please identify the type of grout which will be used to seal the drill holes as well as the
grouting method to be used.
9. Please confirm that blasting, timbering or other mine development work will not be
necessary to safely gain access to underground workings of the Hock Hocking Mine.
10. Please specify the number and length of holes to be drilled.
11. The Applicant has stated a discharge permit will not be needed for the proposed operation.
The proposed operation has a reasonable potential to affect the quality and quantity of the
water which discharges from the Hock Hocking Mine. Therefore, the Division believes that a
discharge permit will be required. Please contact the Colorado Department of Public Health
and Environment, Water Quality Control Division to obtain a discharge permit or otherwise
demonstrate that a discharge permit is not required.
12. The Division believes there is a reasonable potential for adverse impacts to ground water
quality. Please specify how you will demonstrate the proposed operation will not cause
adverse impacts to groundwater quality and will be protective of the existing and reasonably
potential future uses of the water.
13. The Applicant has submitted water quality data for the water discharging from the mine as
well as sampling points on Mosquito Creek. The water quality data are from a single
sampling event. Typically baseline water quality is established from five consecutive quarters
of sampling. Please clarify if the water quality data which were submitted was intended to
serve as the baseline water quality.
14. Please specify how the flow from the Hock Hocking Mine will be measured. In addition,
specify when this information will be provided to the Division.
