§2.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING
ACTIVITIES --MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON
ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES.
2.04.7 Hydrology Description.
(1) Ground Water Information.
Refer to Volume I, Section 2.04.7 for discussion concerning surface
and groundwater studies and monitoring methods as well as the
hydrologic regime of pertinent areas of the northern side of the North
Fork of the Gunnison. Additionally, a detailed discussion concerning
the groundwater in the loadout and stockpile area is presented in the
Alluvial Valley Floor study located in the Alluvial Valley Floor Appendix.
Alluvial wells MW-1, MW-2 and MW-3 to the Bowie No. 2 Mine were
monitored quarterly by the Bowie No. 1 Mine, and have sufficient base
line data. This data is presented in Exhibit 3 Baseline Water Monitoring
Data.
(a) Groundwater hydrology
(i) In the area of the loadout and surrounding area,
ground water occurs in the alluvial sediments of the
North Fork of the Gunnison River. The depth below
the surface is 10 to 35 feet. Ground water is
considered to be horizontally extensive.
i~
(ii) The water bearing alluvium is formed by a mixture of
gravel, sand and clay, including basalt boulders. Of
the three monitoring wells installed, only MW-2 was
drilled to bedrock. MW-1, MW-2 and MW-3 were
drilled to depths of 39, 55 and 49-feet respectively.
Therefore, the aquifer is assumed to be 50 to 75-feet
thick. The Mancos Shale underlying the alluvial
sediments is known as a very poor water-bearing
strata, therefore, it is assumed that no significant
TR-20 2.04 - 9 3/01
