§2.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING
ACTIVITIES --MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON
ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES.
2.04.11 Fish and Wildlife Resources Information.
Refer to Volume I -Text, Section 2.04.11 for a discussion of mine
related effects to fish and wildlife. This section concludes that mine
development could impact endangered fish species by degrading water
quality or by depleting the flow in the upper Colorado River. Surface
drainage from the train loadout and stockpile facilities is controlled by
two sediment ponds. Because of the surface water drainage control,
no significant water quality degradation is expected to occur.
Refer to Exhibit 2 for a report by the United States Fish and Wildlife
biological opinion concerning, among other issues, the impacts of the
operation of the train loadout and stockpile area.
The effect the mine development will have on the endangered fish
species of the Colorado River Basin is usually determined by
estimating the annual depletion of water from the upper Colorado River
caused by mine development. The consumptive use of water
associated with the mine includes water used for dust suppression,
showers and personal use and losses due to evaporation. The addition
of the train loadout and stockpile area will add to the depletion
calculation presented in Volume I, Section 2.04.11. Anew depletion
worksheet is included with this permit revision. The addition of the train
loadout and stockpile area will add 4.4 AC-FT to the annual depletion
rate at Bowie No. 2 Mine by increasing the evaporation and dust
suppression components as follows:
Sediment Pond Evaporation Loss
There are two sedimentation ponds located at the train loadout and
stockpile area. These ponds have a combined surface area of .33
acres. With an evaporative loss of 34 inches per year, the sediment
ponds at the loadout will contribute 0.9 AC-FT per year to the total
depletion at the Bowie No. 2 Mine.
TR-20
2.04 - 31
3/01
