Page 1 of 5 <br />5.0 MAINTENANCE <br />Scheduled or preventive maintenance of the sampling <br />equipment will result in a reduction of downtime and reme- <br />dial maintenance requirements. Since the sampling equipment <br />is only operated on a intermittent basis, the frequency of <br />maintenance is a function of the actual number of hours of <br />use. Normally two to three remedial maintenance activities <br />are required per year. Table 7.1 at the end of this section <br />is an activity matrix summarizing the quality assurance <br />aspects of major maintenance checks. Record all maintenance <br />activities in a maintenance log book. Maintenance can be <br />best performed within the laboratory facility and not in the <br />field. Often spare motors, on which maintenance has been <br />performed, are carried to the field for installation and <br />("~ then calibration. <br />i` 7.1 Sampler Motor <br />Motor brushes usually require replacement after 400 to <br />500 hours of operation at normal line voltage (115 V). The <br />brushes should be replaced before they are worn to the point <br />that motor damage can occur. The optimum replacement inter- <br />val must be determined from experience. Manufacturer's <br />instructions should be followed in replacing the brushes. <br />Recalibration of the rotameter is necessary after brushes are <br />replaced. The recalibration should not, however, be performed <br />on a motor without an initial break-in period to properly <br />seat the brushes against the armature. This period usually <br />requires running the sampler against a resistance equivalent <br />to a clean filter or a No. 18 calibration plate for a period <br />of several hours. A flow diacram is presented in Figure 7.1 <br />describing the various steps required for motor maintenance. <br />Record all sampler maintenance operations with date <br />~'• performed and operator's initials in the sampler log book and <br />on a label which is to be attached to the sampler motor. <br />
