Box 485
Broomfield, CO 80038
Re: Barnhart Pit Noxious Weed Management
Dear Gary Tuttle,
This letter is in regards to your request for Turkey Creek CD's noxious weed management
recommendations for the Barnhart Pit(Permit# M-1984-008)in central Pueblo County. The
approximate 35 acre site is located on Valco Inc. property leased by Transit Mix Concrete Co. On
August 26,2014, Bill Alt, District President, and I,Beth Campbell,District Noxious Weed Control
Program Consultant, performed a visual inspection of the site. We met with Mark Klune and Bill
Pope of Transit Mix at the site.
We would like to note that the southeastern portion of the site proved quite inaccessible so we were
unable to conduct a thorough inspection of that area at the time. However, the area should be
intensively mapped along the Arkansas River. Additional noxious weed species may be found in
that area such as perennial pepperweed(Lepidium latifolium), hoary cress(Cardaria draba),
common teasel(Dipsacus fullonum),houndstongue(Cynoglossum off cinale), poison hemlock
(Conium maculatum),and common burdock(Arctium minus). Flooding is an issue in this area
Disturbed land, like areas that are often flooded, is prime habitat for weed invasions. Frequent
disturbances will make weed management more challenging for this area of the site. Also, due to
the current deed restriction in place on the site, consultation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
may be warranted before any control methods are implemented.
Five(5) State B-Listed noxious weed species were identified on the site during our inspection:
saltcedar(Tamarix sp.),russian olive tree(Elaeagnus angustifolia),russian knapweed(Acroptilon
repens), musk thistle(Carduus nutans),and canada thistle(Cirsium arvense). Please see the map
diagram on the last page for approximate locations of these species. In the following, you will find
options and recommendations for managing these noxious weed species at this site.
Within this report you will find noxious weed management practices, typically recommended by
Colorado State University and other weed organization professionals. These practices have been
tailored to your particular weed problems as discovered during the inspection. Additionally, the
State's fact sheets for each noxious weed species listed herein are included as attachments.
TURKEY CREEK CONSERVATION DISTRICT, THE Noxious WEED MANAGER FOR PUEBLO COUNTY, CO
