August 28, 2014 C- 2010- 089/New Horizon North Mine RDZ
Four segments of the East Ditch for the NHN001 Pond were inspected and compared to the PAP design (see Table
2.05.3(4) -7 -2). Segments are all triangular in shape, and side slopes appeared to be approximately 2:1. Segments
5 and 6 are lined with a geomembrane fabric; the plan calls for shale and hardpan surface. This discrepancy is not
likely problematic but should be routinely inspected in the future. The other discrepancy is the riprap size: the
plan calls for 3 -inch riprap but the material used is significantly smaller (approximate average size is one inch).
The following dimensions were measured with a tape measure and clinometer and are estimates of typical
parameters for each East Ditch segment:
Segment 4 — width 12' to 15', depth 2' to 3'
Segments 5 and 6 — width 15', depth 2', slope 1%
Segment 7 — width I I' to 12', depth 13" to 14 ", slope 4 %.
Two segments of the West Ditch for the NHN001 Pond were inspected and compared to the PAP design (see
Table 2.05.3(4) -7 -2). As with the East Ditch, a discrepancy is the riprap size: the plan calls for 3 -inch riprap but
the material used is significantly smaller (approximate average size is one inch). Also, Segment 2 is trapezoidal
rather than triangular.
The following dimensions were measured with a tape measure and clinometer and are estimates of typical
parameters for each West Ditch segment:
Segment 2 — width 15', very flat slope
Segment 3 — width 13', depth 18 ", slope 4% or more (especially at bottom).
Riprap from the West Ditch is being transported into the pond.
Buffer zones were inspected at Nygren Draw, Glasier Draw, and Meehan Draw. No disturbance was seen within
100 feet of any of the draws.
SIGNS AND MARKERS — Rule 4.02:
Signs for buffer zones were not in place, but a pipeline prevents access by equipment at Nygren Draw.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 2
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 0
Page 3 of 7
