SECTION 31 23 20 <br />TEST PITS <br />PART 1 GENERAL <br />1.1 SUMMARY <br />A. Section Includes: <br />1. Excavation of test pits in compacted earthfill during the progress of the Work. <br />Location and times of excavating test pits shall be as necessary to examine or <br />obtain samples of specific portions of the work in accordance with the applicable <br />provisions of Section 01 40 00, and as determined by the Engineer. <br />B. Related Sections: <br />1. Section 3105 13 - Soils for Earthwork. <br />2. Section 3123 16 - Excavation. <br />3. Section 31 23 23 - Fill <br />PART 2 PRODUCTS <br />2.1 BACKFILLING TEST PITS <br />After examination of test pits and collection of embankment samples, the test pits shall be <br />backfilled with earthfill conforming to the adjacent embankment materials, which shall be <br />placed in layers, moistened, and compacted in accordance with the applicable provisions of <br />Section 31 23 23, as applicable. <br />PART 3 EXECUTION <br />3.1 EXCAVATION OF TEST PITS <br />A. The surface dimensions and depth of each test pit will be determined by the Engineer, <br />but in general, no test pit will involve the excavation and backfill of more than 10 <br />cubic yards of earthfill. <br />B. The sides of the test pits shall be excavated to as near vertical as practicable but in <br />accordance with applicable safety requirements to allow inspection of the compacted <br />earthfill by the Engineer. <br />C. The Contractor shall adjust its operations so that test pits will remain open for a <br />maximum of 4 hours to facilitate inspection and collection of embankment samples. <br />D.
