The timing of the inspection was chosen to coincide with the mine's conducting
its quarterly water sampling.
Skies were clear and temperatures were in the mid -80s. Wade Wymore was contacted at the main office
upon my arrival. James Counts conducted the water sampling.
HYDROLOGIC BALANCE - Rule 4.05
Drainage Control 4.05.1, 4.05.2, 4.05.3; Siltation Structures 4.05.5, 4.05.6; Discharge Structures 4.05.7,
4.05.10; Diversions 4.05.4; Effluent Limits 4.05.2; Ground Water Monitoring 4.05.13; Surface Water
Monitoring 4.05.13; Drainage — Acid and Toxic Materials 4.05.8; Impoundments 4.05.6, 4.05.9; Stream
Buffer Zones 4.05.18:
• Water monitoring is conducted for the mine on a quarterly basis. Groundwater is sampled from the
Wiltse well at King I and from the Up- Gradient and Down - Gradient monitoring wells at King II. All
three wells are located in the Hay Gulch alluvium. Surface water is sampled from the Hay Gulch
Irrigation Ditch at a location near the Up- Gradient well.
• The Wiltse well is located on the southern margin of the Hay Gulch valley floor, approximately 385
feet west of the King I Haul Road. The La Plata County GIS website indicates the surface is owned
by the Ute Mountain Tribe. The well consists of a large- diameter corrugated metal standpipe, with a
metal cover, and is protected by a triangular fenced enclosure (Photo 1). A pump installed inside the
standpipe (Photo 2) was historically used to provide water to the King I surface facilities.
• At the Wiltse well, Mr. Counts measured the depth to water using a tape- measure, and withdrew a
sample from the well using a tube -style baler. Field parameters were measured (pH, Temperature,
Total Dissolved Solids, and Electrical Conductivity). Following the data collection, the meter probes
were rinsed with distilled water. Portions of the water were then poured into two labeled sample
bottles, acquired from Green Analytical Laboratory in Durango (Photos 3 and 4).
• The same collection, sampling and bottling procedures were followed for the other two wells and for
the irrigation ditch, all of which are located on land owned by the State of Colorado.
• The Up- Gradient Monitoring Well is located at an abandoned home site on the south side of CR 120,
0.9 miles northeast of the King II entrance. The upright 6" ID cast iron pipe stands just outside the
fence that forms the eastern boundary of the yard (Photo 5).
