IRIS MITIGATION AND DESIGN,INC.
IRIS 2022 Arapahoe Street
MITIGATION AND DESIGN,INC. Golden,Colorado 80401
Environmental Consulting Phone: 720-272-1985
bleisure@irismitigation.com
SUMMARY
The Flood destroyed 47 percent of 2013 Phase 1 establishing planted trees, shrubs, and willow
stakes in mitigation areas along the Creek. The Flood also destroyed approximately 85 percent
of the 2012 seeded and establishing grasses/wildflowers in mitigation areas. According to the
iten 3 meter square plots, there was approximately 52 percent loss of vegetation along the
Creek due to the damaging Flood.
In summary, 43 percent of planted trees, shrubs, and willow stakes remain of the trees and
shrubs that were originally planted in the mitigation areas. If the willow stakes are removed
' from the calculations then 61 percent of establishing trees and shrubs remain post-flood.
Mitigation monitoring of planted trees and shrubs in August 2013 showed that approximately 90
' percent of trees and shrubs had been establishing. Therefore, of the establishing planted trees
and shrubs just prior to the September 2013 flooding event, 47 percent were destroyed due to
the damaging forces of the Flood and 43 percent are still found at the site and are currently
' establishing.
' All seeded mitigation areas were establishing in August 2013. The Flood created a loss of
approximately 85 percent of seeded vegetation in the mitigation areas that were establishing
prior to the event.
' The Flood along the Creek was a natural disaster that resulted in vegetation loss of 50 percent
and greater. On behalf of Cotter, we request that the remaining 61 percent of planted trees and
' shrubs in the mitigation areas (7 trees and 206 shrubs) be accepted as having met Phase 1
Schwartmalder Mine Phase 1 -2013 Mitigation Monitoring Report Page 11
May 31,2014
