PRODUCTION
(Table B -2)
Total herbaceous production in 2012 was 976.1 pounds per acre. Of this, 326.5 pounds were introduced
perennial forbs. Introduced perennial cool season grasses and native perennial cool season grasses
were the only other lifeforms functioning as significant producers, contributing 280.1 and 257.0 pounds
per acre respectively. Three other lifeforms were present, each less than 50 pounds per acre.
WOODY PLANT DENSITY
Background Density
(Table B -3)
Total average "Background" woody plant density in 2012 in BRB -5 was 210.4 stems per acre. Big
sagebrush (Seriphidium tridentatum) was the densest at 84.2 stems per acre followed by mountain
snowberry (Symphoricarpos rotundifolius) with 54.2 stems per acre. Six other species of shrub were
present, each with densities of 40 stems per acre or fewer.
Concentration Area Density
(Table B- 4)
Total average "Concentration Area" woody plant density in 2012 in BRB -5 was 1,614.7 stems per acre.
Big sagebrush was the densest at 1,009.3 stems per acre followed by mountain snowberry with 284.9
stems per acre and Wood's rose (Rosa woodsii) with 174.0 stems per acre. Seven other species of
shrub /tree were present, each with densities of fewer than 65 stems per acre.
2012 Mountain Brush Reference Area
(Photographs 42 through 45 and 49)
COVER
(Table B -5)
Native shrubs were the predominant lifeform observed in the Mountain Brush Reference Area,
contributing 70.9 percent total first -hit vegetation cover. Of this, Gambel's oak (Quercus gambelii)
contributed 50.3 percent, Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia) contributed 13.2 percent and
16
