Total average vegetation cover for first -hits was 74.3 percent. Allowable first -hit herbaceous cover was
44.4 percent. Cover by standing dead, litter, bare soil and rock averaged 0.5, 16.1, 9.1 and 0.0 percent
respectively. Average species density was 33.4 species per 100 sq. m.
PRODUCTION
(Table A -8)
Total herbaceous production in 2011 was 1,286.5 pounds per acre. Native perennial forbs and native
perennial cool season grasses were the biggest producers, contributing 733.4 and 458.6 pounds per
acre, respectively. Four lifeforms were present with less than 50 pounds per acre.
2012 Phase 111 BRB -5
(Photographs 17 through 41)
COVER
(Table B -1)
Introduced perennial forbs were by a small margin the predominant lifeform observed in Area BRB -5,
contributing 12.5 percent total first -hit vegetation cover. Of this, alfalfa (Medicago sativa) contributed the
most with 11.4 percent. Introduced perennial cool season grasses were the second most abundant
lifeform contributing 11.3 percent total first -hit vegetation cover, composed predominately of intermediate
wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium) and orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata). Additionally, native
perennial cool season grasses contributed 8.4 percent first -hit vegetation cover, consisting primarily of
basin wildrye (Leymus cinereus) and western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii). Among the 83 species
of vascular plants encountered during quantitative sampling were the noxious weeds whitetop (Cardaria
draba), hound's tongue (Cynoglossum officinale), bull thistle (Cirsium vulgare), musk thistle (Carduus
nutans ssp. macrolepis) and Canada thistle (Breea arvensis). Only hound's tongue and Canada thistle
had measurable abundance (0.34 and 0.09 percent cover, respectively).
Total average vegetation cover for first -hits was 36.9 percent. Allowable first -hit herbaceous vegetation
cover was 35.8 percent. Cover by standing dead, litter, bare soil and rock averaged 4.3, 41.4, 13.7, and
3.8 percent, respectively. Average species density was 23.1 species per 100 sq. m.
15
