April 2014 8 10381640A
Golder observed the installation and development of monitoring wells MW -5, MW -6 and MW -7 as part of
this field investigation. The monitoring wells were installed between December 1 and December 26, 2012.
Golder recorded soil and rock geological conditions and collected laboratory soil and rock samples during
the well borehole advancements. Lithological and well construction logs for the newly installed wells are
provided in Appendix C. Well construction details for all Site wells are summarized on Table 1.
Golder conducted hydraulic packer testing at three intervals during the advancement of MW -7 and rising
and falling head (slug) testing on monitoring well MW -5 after well installation and development. Monitoring
well installation, geological observations, and hydraulic testing were performed in general accordance
with the approved Groundwater Characterization Plan (Golder 2012) and modifications (Pottorff 2012).
The Groundwater Characterization Field Summary Report (Golder 2013) details the tasks performed
during the field investigation, monitoring well construction details, geological observations, and hydraulic
conductivity calculations and results.
3.2 Laboratory Testing of Solids
Whole rock sampling and laboratory testing were completed in accordance with the approved
Groundwater Characterization Plan (Golder 2012) and modifications (Pottorff 2012). Seven whole rock
samples were collected from the monitoring well borehole cuttings or core and submitted to ACZ
Laboratories, Inc. (ACZ) of Steamboat Springs, Colorado for SPLP and bulk chemical analysis (EPA
3050). Additionally, two samples of the CKD materials were collected from borehole CKD -1 and submitted
for laboratory testing as part of the 2012 investigation. The results are discussed in Sections 4.2.1 and
4.2.2 of this report.
3.3 Review of Water Supply Well Information
A review of publically available information was conducted for the previously identified nearby private
wells to ascertain if geologic or water chemistry data are available. This information was collected to
answer DRMS's concerns that nearby wells may be completed in the same aquifer and may become
impacted. This information search was conducted for both upgradient and downgradient well records from
the Colorado Division of Water Resources (DWR). The findings of this review are discussed in Section
4.4 of this report.
3.4 Groundwater Monitoring
Groundwater monitoring events were conducted in accordance with the SAP (Golder 2010). Golder
conducted one groundwater sampling event in September 2010, which has been followed by quarterly
sampling of the monitoring wells beginning in March 2011. In 2013, Golder collected quarterly
groundwater samples from the newly installed monitoring wells (MW -5, MW -6 and MW -7) in addition to
the previously installed monitoring wells (MW -1, MW -2, MW -3 and MW -4).
