April 2014
7
3.0 GROUNDWATER CHARACTERIZATION PROGRAM
10381640A
Golder developed the Groundwater Characterization Plan dated October 23, 2012 (Golder 2012), in
response to the June 25, 2012 DRMS letter. Based on our understanding of DRMS concerns, the primary
questions that need to be answered to ultimately achieve full release of reclamation liability include:
• Has groundwater been impacted by CKD disposal at the Site?
• If groundwater has been impacted by CKD, are remedial actions necessary?
The scope of work (SOW) outlined in the characterization plan were designed to address these
questions and included the following:
• Conduct a field investigation to include: 1) drilling and rock core sampling, 2) new
groundwater monitoring well construction, 3) collecting samples from the new and
existing monitoring wells, and 4) obtaining and evaluating additional information from
private wells in the vicinity of the Site, if available,
• Summarize the field investigation activities in a brief report, and
• Prepare a Characterization Report after four quarters of monitoring of the new wells has
been performed. The report was to define the extent of impacted groundwater and outline
proposed actions, if necessary, to minimize current and future impacts.
These tasks have been completed and this report summarizes activities that have occurred to date.
3.1 Hydrogeological Field Investigation
Golder conducted a drilling, well installation and hydraulic testing field program at the Site between
November 28, 2012 and March 5, 2013 in general accordance with the approved Groundwater
Characterization Plan (Golder 2012) and modifications (Pottorff 2012). The tasks performed in this field
program consisted of the following components:
■ Drilling;
• Geological Logging;
• Whole Rock Core Sampling;
• Packer Testing;
■ Well Installation and Development; and
■ Well Hydraulic Testing.
Golder observed the advancement of borehole CKD -1 through the CKD layer in the disposal area A2. The
borehole was advanced on December 28, 2012 to collect CKD samples for laboratory analysis. The
borehole log for CKD -1 is provided in Appendix C.
i110\81640a\ 0400\ gwchar+ ellinstallfieldrep _fnl- 30apr14\10381640a gwcharrpt _holcim- Uoettcher_fnl- 28apr14- with holcim edits.docx
Golder
Associates
