Skies were overcast, and the temperature was cool.
Wade Wymore, the mine's Surface Supervisor, accompanied me on the inspection.
HYDROLOGIC BALANCE - Rule 4.05
Drainage Control 4.05.1, 4.05.2, 4.05.3; Siltation Structures 4.05.5, 4.05.6; Discharge Structures
4.05.7, 4.05.10; Diversions 4.05.4; Effluent Limits 4.05.2; Ground Water Monitoring 4.05.13;
Surface Water Monitoring 4.05.13; Drainage — Acid and Toxic Materials 4.05.8; Impoundments
4.05.6, 4.05.9; Stream Buffer Zones 4.05.18:
• At King 11, ditches, culverts, and the sediment pond were dry.
• With the exception of scattered accumulations of tumble weeds (Photo 1), the ditches and
culverts were in good condition.
• An employee of the mine was gathering tumbleweeds at the time of the inspection and
hauling them to the mine's 40 CY dumpster for disposal.
• We discussed Ditch "D ", which flows south from near the scale house (Photo 2). Mr.
Wymore said the mine is considering filling in the ditch and replacing it with a culvert pipe
and drop inlets. This change would increase the area available for material storage. GCC is
reminded that any changes of this nature need to be designed, submitted as a revision to the
permit, and approved, prior to any work taking place on the ground.
OTHER (WEEDS):
• Tumbleweeds, predominantly, Kochia, continue to collect in ditches and other low -lying
areas. This annual weed, which is not on the State's noxious weed list, has out - competed
nearly all desirable vegetation between the King 11 surface facilities and the County Road.
The area's prevailing southwesterly winds tend to carry the weed skeletons northward up the
valley, where they become trapped, creating a perpetual maintenance problem for the
culverts and ditches.
• The La Plata County Weed Manager (382 -6470) might be able to provide GCC with tips for
successful management of Kochia.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 7
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3 Page 2 of 8
