SAGEBRUSH EXTENDED REFERENCE AREA (2012)
(Photographs 28 -33)
Cover
(Table A -9)
Native shrubs were the predominant lifeform observed in the Sagebrush Reference Area,
contributing 24.0 percent all -hit vegetation cover. Of this, mountain snowberry contributed 14.3
percent and big sagebrush contributed 7.4 percent. Native perennial cool season grasses and
native perennial fortis and made strong contributions to all -hit cover, with 15.3 and 11.0 percent,
respectively.
Also observed in the area in small amounts was the noxious weed hound's tongue (Cynoglossum
officinale, 0.1 percent cover).
Total average vegetation cover for first hits was 50.2 percent. Allowable all -hit herbaceous
vegetation cover was 30.8 percent (Table B -1). Cover by standing dead, litter, bare soil and rock
averaged 5.8, 36.8, 7.1 and 0.1 percent, respectively (first hit). Average species density was 27.6
species per 100 sq. m.
Production
(Table A -10)
Total herbaceous production in 2012 was 444.3 pounds per acre. Of this, 242.7 pounds were
native perennial cool season grasses and 176.7 were native perennial forbs. Five other lifeforms
were present at less than 20 pounds per acre.
STEEP MOUNTAIN BRUSH EXTENDED REFERENCE AREA (2012)
(Photographs 34 -37)
Cover
(Table A -11)
Native shrubs were the predominant lifeform observed in the Steep Mountain Brush Reference
Area, contributing 20.9 percent all -hit vegetation cover. Of this, big sagebrush contributed 6.6
percent and Gambel's oak contributed 3.9 percent. Native perennial cool season grasses also
made a strong contribution to all -hit cover, with 10.3 percent — Montana wheatgrass (Elymus
albicans) contributed 5.1 percent.
Also observed in the area was the noxious weeds hound's tongue (Cynoglossum officinale, 0.3
percent cover).
IN
