On September
16, 2013 the South Platte River flooded the mine area causing the
river to erode the north and south banks of the eastern most
reclamation phase (Lake Robert). Now 5 month later the river
still flows thru the lake area that was Lake Robert and does not
appear to be returning to its original channel. This area was
essentially reclaimed and we were just waiting to the grass to
grow so it could be released from the permit area.
The attached map shows how the area looks now. One branch
of the river enters the permit area in the southeast corner and
leaves the mine on the north end. All of the underwater slopes
have been destroyed as the lake is now part of the river channel.
The flood damaged the vegetation along all sides of the lake area
and everything east of the river is now inaccessible from the
mine.
The cost to restore this area to the pre- flooding conditions
is cost prohibitive and would entail relocating the river to it's
original channel. Something we do not feel is our responsibility
since it broke thru the original bank on the adjoining property
to the south. In addition, all of the site would have to be
regraded; topsoil would have to be imported since it was washed
away by flooding; trees would have to be replaced and the site
rAn Equal Employment Opportunity Employer
