The TDL was constructed along with the Mill in the mid -
seventies. From the time of startup, this pipeline and its supports have continuously conveyed
tailings slurry from its discharge at the Mill to the tailings impoundment where it is deposited.
Over the years there have been several minor failures along the TDL that have cumulatively
prompted Henderson to initiate a complete investigation of the system. This inspection revealed
that the vast majority of the steel support structure has corroded to the point that the structural
capacity of the system has been compromised. The purpose of this project is to provide a safe
and cost effective means of reestablishing the structural integrity of the TDL steel support
system.
The proposed design will involve placing wide flange section beams adjacent to the existing bar
joists. The load will then be transferred from the existing joists to the new beam structure.
Activities required to complete this project will include hydro- excavation of soil materials in
contact with the structure, temporary shoring, concrete formwork and placement, steel shop
drawing preparation, steel component fabrication and delivery, and structural steel erection.
As shown in the included drawings, this project will involve the structural refurbishment
associated with the spans between droptowers 1 -14. All detail surrounding actual reinforcement
via steel and concrete is also detailed. Additionally, a manhole entry point will be added to the
base of droptower 9, which has a cyclone bank sitting on it, making inspection of the tower very
V
