Photographs were taken by Harry Ranney
and later evaluated and annotated by Marcia Talvitie, both of the Division.
The Paonia Loadout and the East Mine were virtually clear of snow. The Timber Storage Area
and West Mine had some snow cover, which did not appear to be thick.
Paonia Loadout Facilities (ref. Permit Map 7)
The Loadout is located approximately 1.5 miles NNE of downtown Paonia, on the east side
of State Highway 133. A railroad siding / spur was originally constructed to facilitate the
access of unit trains from the main rail line, across the North Fork of the Gunnison River.
Bowie has been actively removing the rail and ties during this winter. That operation appears
to be complete, and the materials have been stockpiled within the permit area for removal
from the site.
• The northern sediment pond was obscured by trees, preventing observation of any water that
might be present. The pond located at the Coal Storage Area appeared to contain water.
• The Farmers Ditch, which crosses beneath the northern end of the Loadout, was dry.
• The operator continues to store miscellaneous materials and equipment on the two bench
areas located east of the driveway accesses to SH 133.
• No reclamation or realignment of Black Bridge Road has commenced, and the railroad
underpass has not been removed.
• Other remaining structures and buildings include the truck scale and scale house; the shop;
and the substation. The RR bridge across the N Fork of the Gunnison was not photographed,
but that structure also remains.
East Mine (ref. Permit Maps 6A -5N and 8A -8A)
• South - facing slopes at the East Mine were clear of snow, although the permanent access road
was snow - covered throughout much of its length.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 9
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 2 Page 2 of I I
