3.2.3 Drain Outlets
As previously described, the facility is underlain by a geomembrane liner and sub - drainage
collection system. Water from the free -water pool (plus any net infiltration from direct
precipitation on the surface of the impoundment area) infiltrates the tailing, is intercepted by the
impoundment liner and is drained off via the granular subdrain and a network of perforated
collector pipes, which are routed under the dam to three outfalls at the downstream toe of the
dam. The sub -drain outfall pipes do not collect surface water from the impoundment directly.
On Site Visits 1 and 2, the sub -drain pipe outfalls were covered by sediment. Seepage was
observed emanating from the embankment slope approximately 5 feet vertically directly above
the pipes, and in the surrounding outlet area. The outlet area as it appeared during Site Visit 2 is
depicted in Figure 8.
Figure 8 Site Visit 2, Sub -Drain Outlet Area Prior to
Uncovering, Looking Downstream from Above Outlet
San Luis Project Miller Geotechnical Consultants
Tailing Dam Data Report 14 February 2014
