October 2001 -30- 003-2182.004
Field destructive testing of seams consisted of testing ten 1-inch wide coupons, five of which
were tested for peel, and five of which were tested for shear. Poly-Flex tested the inside and
outside tracks of the fusion welds for peel. Poly-Flex performed all destructive tests on site
using a field tensiometer, and Golder observed and documented all tests.
The specified acceptance criteria for LLDPE shear and peel tests was that four of the five
coupons tested must have an ultimate strength of at least 112 and 96 ppi, respectively, and the
peel tests must also achieve a Film Tear Bond (FTB)upon breaking. The specified acceptance
criteria for HDPE shear and peel tests was that four of the five coupons tested must have an
ultimate strength of at least 160 and 104 ppi, respectively, and the peel tests must also achieve a
FTB upon breaking. One Upper fusion destructive test sample failed original testing and was
bounded in accordance with the specifications. The failing seam length was capped and
non-destructively tested by vacuum testing.
The summaries of destructive test results for fusion and extrusion seams are presented in
Appendix J-8a and J-8b. The Geomembrane Record Drawing No. 3 (Appendix A) shows the
destructive test sample locations.
6.1.6 Non-Destructive Testing
Poly-Flex performed non-destructive seam testing on completed seams and geomembrane
repairs. Non-destructive testing for seams included pressure testing of fusion-welded seams,
and vacuum testing of extrusion welded seams and repairs. Golder monitored and documented
the non-destructive testing.
Prior to pressure testing of fusion seams, Poly-Flex heat-sealed both ends of the air channel
between the two tracks of the double wedge weld. Poly-Flex then inserted a pressure gauge in
one end of the sealed channel. Poly-Flex pressurized the air channel to approximately
30 pounds per square inch (psi) using an air pump. After pressure stabilization, Golder
I\00\2182\EXTERNAL POND RPWINALDOC Golder Associates
