October 2001 -17- 003-2182.004
are presented in Appendix G-2 and summarized in Table 5. CQC Proctor tests were not
included in the Proctor testing frequency.
4.1.5 Permeability Tests
Golder conducted two permeability tests of recompacted samples of Soil Liner Fill at Golder's
laboratory in Lakewood, Colorado. The testing frequency (approximately one test per 3,000
cubic yards) exceeded the minimum specified testing frequency of one test per 5,000 cubic
yards. Testing was performed with a flexible-wall permeameter with backpressure saturation
and a constant rate of flow (ASTM D5084, Method D). The fill was recompacted to the in-
place density measured during nuclear density tests and the corresponding moisture content(as
determined from oven-dried samples). The nuclear density value measured in the field was
corrected for coarse particles according to ASTM D4718. Laboratory tests yielded coefficients
of permeability for the CQA samples from 2.1 x 10-8 cm/sec to 5.8 x 10-8 cm/sec, all of which
are less than the specified maximum permeability of 1 x 10"6 cm/sec. The test results for the
Soil Liner Fill are presented in Appendix G-3 and summarized in Table 5.
4.2 Field Testing and Monitoring
Golder observed all fill operations in the External Pond to verify, when necessary, lift thickness,
adequate compaction, and acceptable moisture conditions. When Golder performed nuclear
density testing, holes made in the fill during testing were filled by tamping Soil Liner Fill into
the holes. Golder standardized nuclear gauges at the start of each day's work according to
ASTM D2922.
4.2.1 Subgrade Preparation
Golder monitored subgrade preparation, including verification that Ames compacted the
subgrade with a smooth drum vibratory compactor. Golder verified that Ames removed
protruding rocks from the subgrade surface prior to Soil Liner Fill placement. Golder
I\00\2182\F=RNAL POND"TTINAL DOC Golder Associates
