2013 Annual Reclamation Report
Southfield Mine
Minor Revision No. 58 (MR -58) was submitted and approved for the mitigation performed for
the subsidence repair work. Further detail is also included under the subtitle, Subsidence
Mitigation in a later portion of this report.
Previously, during May 2007, a small sinkhole had formed on the northeast flank of the refuse
pile south of and adjacent to Pond 4. It was approximately 15 ft in diameter and 6 to 8 ft deep. Al
Weaver of Weaver Engineering Services determined from old mine works maps that the
subsidence was from the east portion of the abandoned Canon Shamrock Mine. The subsidence
was immediately backfilled and compacted with material borrowed from the south shore of Pond
4. The site was then reseeded with the approved seed mix. The site is inspected on a routine basis
and no further disturbance or settling has been observed.
Seeded or Planted Areas
During the previous reporting period,October of 2012, 0.5 acre was seeded at mitigation work
performed at the abandoned Canon National mine as explained in the above topic, Disturbed,
Backfilled and Topsoiled Areas.
During October, 2004, interseeding of approximately 6 acres at the Mine Site, comprising lands
owned by the Corley Company, was completed at the end of October, 2004. EFCI previously
seeded and mulched this area during site revegetation activities in October 2003. Due to some
confusion in dealing with the changing wishes and needs of two different landowners concerning
seed mixes, EFCI inadvertently applied an incorrect seed mix on the Corley property in 2003. To
correct the seeding with the approved seed mixture on the Corley property, EFCI submitted a
plan to the DRMS proposing interseeding of the grass species Indian Ricegrass and Beardless
Bluebunch Wheatgrass. Upon approval, EFCI broadcast interseeded the referenced area (October
2004) at a rate of 1.4 and 3.1 pounds PLS /acre of Indian Ricegrass and Beardless Bluebunch
Wheatgrass as was previously reported.
As stated in previous Annual Reclamation Reports, during the year 2004, EFCI planted shrub
clumps in the reclaimed facilities and refuse disposal areas at the Mine Site in accordance with
permit requirements and in response to landowner preference. Accordingly, during May 2004,
approximately 1,800 plants were purchased from and then planted by the Colorado State Forest
Service. Based on a plan approved by the DRMS, EFCI established a total of seven (7) shrub
clumps (plots) on the refuse pile, the Pond 3 and 4 areas, and a total of five (5) shrub clumps in
the facilities area on the Vento property. The approved shrub clumps were planted based on the
following composition of seedlings:
Refuse Area Shrub Clumps (small)
12 Rocky Mountain junipers
4 Ponderosa pine
2
Facilities Area Shrub Clumps
60 Rocky Mountain junipers
20 Ponderosa pine
