February 2014 Page 1 -6
All sediment ponds and direct discharge points are permitted under NPDES Permits
CO- 0000906. Sampling stations for this permit are described below.
NE -001 is a grab sample station from the New Elk Mine water discharge V -notch flume
located on the Purgatoire River for NPDES Discharge Permit CO- 0000906. The station
monitors the quality and quantity of mine water discharge from the New Elk Mine. During the
third quarter of 1989, the mine was sealed and the discharge of mine inflow water was
terminated until pumping resumed in December of 2008.
Table 1 -2. This site was
used to discharge water from remedial activities at the UST facilities area. NE -001 -G was
sampled at its outfall prior to discharging into ditch D -16, which flows into Pond NE007, a site
monitored under NPDES CO- 0000906. This site was eliminated during 1999 with reclamation
of the remediation systems and termination of Permit COG - 310069 was approved by CDPHE.
NE -004: A grab sample station of the discharge from the primary spillway of sediment
Pond 004. This site predominantly handles stormwater runoff from the New Elk underground
development waste pile.
