then turn it off at nine o'clock.
The morning after we
moved in we awoke to three feet
because my folks were behind
on their payments. Now it was
my turn to, walk to the mine. The
men didn't bring the jeep all the
way home until my parents had
caught up on their payments.
Until they started getting a pay-
check from the company, the
men did a lot of walking that
winter,
One funny incident hap-
pened at my parent's house.
Shortly after they moved in they
were eating supper when a pack
rat ran across the floor looking -
for a hole to escape into. My dad
shot it with a pistol and Mom
cleaned up the mess. Another
funny thing happened the next
summer. The neighbor kids were
playing in the roadway close to
our woodpile, when they saw a
rattlesnake.
Mom went out with a shovel
and killed it. Later in the same
woodpile we found a baby chip-
munk that was almost starved
to death. I took him in and fed
him with a doll bottle until he
was big enough to eat for him-
self. We called him Monkey and
he furnished hours of entertain-
ment. We had him four years,
then one day he just disappeared
and we never knew what hap-
pened- to him.
We had a lot of block
activities -that first year. We
would all get together and play
cards in the wintertime, either
penny ante poker or pinochle.
ple at a time, but it was nerve -
wracking.
In the summertime we all
got together and had Weiner and
marshmallow toasts and played
soft ball across the road, where
the quonsets were later built.
Everyone played, even the little
kids two and three years old, and
of course the grandparents like
my folks.
We also went rabbit hunting
and had some good breakfasts of
fried rabbit, biscuits, and gravy.
A lot of us hunted deer, also,
even when there wasn't a sea-
son, but it furnished much need-
ed meat and we never abused it.
I remember . one time we were
out hunting with another couple,
spotlighting, and we shot a deer.
Three of us got out to go take
care of it and the other lady
stayed in the car with a baby. We
hearing this funny noise, like
someone breathing real gruff.
Martin whispered to me that he
thought the other man had shot
a bull, then all at once he put his
hand on my 'shoulder and said
that the noise was being made
by a mountain lion. The hair on
the back of my neck stood up,
and we headed back to the car.
In our mad rush we stumbled
over the deer and stopped to
gut it out. I held the flashlight
and I was shaking so bad that
it's a wonder the guys could see
what they were doing. The other
couple went back the next day
and collected the deer. They said
that there were mountain lion
tracks all over the place.
F Block was a real con-
nected community, we all got
along great and had a lot of good
times together.
