Baseline Hydrologic Monitoring Plan — Hansen Project 14
2.2.3 Surface Water Quality
Cumulative surface water quality results are provided in Appendix I. Most surface waters in the project
area are calcium - bicarbonate type waters with low concentrations of dissolved solids (Figure 6). The
exception is Salt Creek (station SW04 -SA) which is a sodium - chloride type water with high concentrations
of dissolved solids. Total dissolved solids (TDS) in SW04 -SA ranges from 4,320 mg/L to 8,200 mg /L,
while electrical conductivity ranges from 7,400 to 13,100 µS /cm.
The pH of surface water samples in the Hansen Project area' is slightly basic (8.0 to 8.9). The TDS ranges
from 100 to 520 mg/L with a mean of 279.6 mg /L. Dissolved concentrations for most metals are below
detection (Appendix I). Uranium was detected at low concentrations at upstream stations SW10 -FC,
SW11 -MT, and SW12 -HG. Uranium naturally increases downstream of the ore deposit, as shown in the
baseline data collected to date at station SW22 -MT, where uranium concentrations ranged from 0.0022 to
0.0309 mg/L with a mean of 0.0177 mg/L. Dissolved and total uranium concentrations are nearly
identical, indicating that uranium occurs in the dissolved phase. Dissolved and total gross alpha activity
ranges from below detection to 21 pCi/L in 39 samples from five surface water stations near the Hansen
Deposit. Most stations show little or no seasonality in water quality, with the exception of station SW14-
MT (Figure 5).
Units, mgA
Total Dissolved Solids
MW-08 Mar-09 Jun49 Sep-09 Dec-09 Apr -10 Jut-10 Oct -10 Jan-11 May -11
Figure 5.
