• Statistical adequacy requirements For production were cal-
culated using the formula in Section 2.3.1, except that mean production
and variance were used in place of mean cover and variance.
2.4 PLANT SPECIES COLLECTION AND IDENTIFICATION
Plant species were collected throughout the 1981 growing season.
Species were identified Dy Field ecologists conducting the study and
confirmed by Or. William A. Weber, Curator of the Herbarium, University
of Colorado. Taxonomic nomenclature lollows Weber and Johnston (19791.
Nickerson of al. !19761 and Beetle 119701 were consulted in en attempt
to apply the most widely utilized common names. Primary selenium
indicators ere in accordance with WDEQ Guideline No. 2 as revised March
1980. Noxious weed designators follow Thornton et al. 119741. State-
ments of origin follow Weber and Johnston 119791. Voucher specimens
have been preserved in a reference collection.
2.5 SPECIES DIVERSITY
The diversity lequitabilityl index was determined using the formula
• -~ \tJ'/ log ~N1~
where ni equols the absolute cover value (or each species encountered
in a community and N equals the total absolute vegetation cover in a
Community IWhiftaker 19751.
2.6 TIME OF SA/MLING
Vegetation cover and production data were collected in July 1981
and density work started in July and finished in August 1981.
2.7 AGENCY COORDINATION
On 24 June 1981, Nr. Glenn Sides of U.S. Steel and Mr. David Johnson
of Western Resource Development, consultant to U.S. Steel, met with Mr.
Tom Gillis and Mr. Jim Herron of CMLR to define the vegetation sampling
requirements for the Somerset Mine. On 1 July 1981, Mr. Johnson met with
Mr. Gillis at the Somerset Mine to resolve additional details of the
proposed study.
The sampling program defined in Section 2.0, Methods, is the study
plan recommenced and approved by Messers Gillis and Herron.
-4-
