To: Young, Doug (Mark Udall); Boller, Carolyn (Mark Udall); Ellison, Carter (Mark Udall); Sample, Paul (Mark Udall)
Subject: Mary McKinney Mine /Gravesite
I got a letter yesterday from a woman named Janet Kunz whose son fell down a mineshaft in Cripple Creek in 1986. His
body could not be recovered, and the mine was one of several in the area that were reclaimed by the state.
Investigators were able to send a camera down the shaft and confirmed that the young man's body was at the bottom,
and the state lists the shaft on their graves registry. Apparently Gary Hart planted a tree there, and the family placed a
memorial plaque nearby.
The family has just learned that the land has since been sold back into private hands, although the mine itself remains in
the hands of the State. Here's the problem: the Cripple Creek and Victor Mining Company is planning on building a
leeching pond at or very near the mine and plans on removing the memorial plaque. The company apparently told the
family that the land was their property, and they would do as they pleased on the site.
Ms. Kunz is requesting that we help block the leeching pond OR help to have her son's remains recovered prior to the
construction. She has been in touch with all kinds of people in the OSME, and a Vernon Maldonado from the Denver
office directed her to us. She's also sent a letter to Arlen Specter.
Any advice on what we can do?
