MCATEE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY
dba McAtee Paving Company • Sterling Redi Mix Company • Green Bros. Ready Mix
P.O. Box 1908 • Sterling, Colorado 80751
Phone: 970-522-3647 • Fax: 970-522-9725
October 24, 2013
Mr. Tom Kaldenbach
Minerals Section
Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety
1313 Sherman St, #215
Denver, CO 20203
RECEIVED
Dear Mr. Kaldenbach; OCT 28 2013
Division of Reclamation,
RE: Riverside Pit - M- 1976 -056 Mining & Safety
Flood Status
This letter is an explanation of the current status of the
conditions in the Lake Robert area of the Riverside Pit. On
September 16, 2013 the South Platte River Flood of 2013 reached
Sterling and at some point south of the mine began to leave the river
channel and flood the west bank. From what we can determine it
entered the Low -line Ditch at their diversion structure, flowed down
the ditch for a short distance and then blew out the east ditch bank
dumping water on to the property to the south of the mine. It flowed
across this property and eventually entered the mine on the south
end of Lake Robert, exited out the north end and flowed along the
railroad embankment back to the main river channel. It has now been
more than a month and the river is still flowing thru the eastern
part of the mine area.
Review of a 2009 inspection by the Division indicates that the
bank slopes around Lake Robert were stabilized and vegetated. The
pictures with the report show the area in questions. All of the above
An Equal Employment Opportunity Employer
