October 2012 Page 1 -7
NE -005: A grab sample station of the discharge from the primary spillway of sediment
Pond 005 which treats stormwater and industrial runoff from the area east of the trucking offices.
This pond was reclaimed in 2004 and the site is no longer monitored.
NE -006: The thickener recycling Pond 006 (prep plant process water) is a non -
discharging facility.
NE -007: A grab sample station of the discharge from the primary spillway of sediment
Pond 007. This site treats stormwater runoff from the East Portal of the New Elk facilities area.
NE -008: A grab sample location at the primary spillway outfall of sediment Pond 008
located at the base of the Refuse Disposal Area of the New Elk Mine.
NE -009: A grab sample station of the New Elk Mine water discharge pipe located in
Apache Canyon. The station was established to monitor the quality of mine water discharge
from the New Elk Mine.
NE -033: A grab sample station from the sewage treatment plant intake and discharge.
The sewage treatment plant was inactivated during 2012.
1.2.4 Alluvial Wells
Location, surface elevation, total depth, zone of completion, and monitoring purpose are
provided for all wells in Table 1 -3.
PAW -1: A dip sample from an alluvial well located to the south of the Purgatoire River
in alluvium adjacent to PRS -1. This sample station was established to monitor water quality
above significant mining activity. Data collected at this station (annual minimum, maximum,
mean) from 1984 to date are presented in Table B -3.
PAW -2: A dip sample from an alluvial well located to the north of and adjacent to the
Purgatoire River approximately 200 yards downstream of PAW -l. This sample station was
established to monitor water quality down gradient from the underground coal development
refuse pile at the New Elk Mine. Data collected at this station (annual minimum, maximum,
mean) from 1984 to date are presented in Table B -4.
PAW -3: A dip sample from an alluvial well located to the north of and adjacent to the
Purgatoire River approximately 300 yards downstream of PAW -2. During March and April of
1985, 500 ft of the Middle Fork of the Purgatoire River was diverted to the north to create
additional room for the coal stockpile at the New Elk Preparation Plant. The diversion was cut
through an existing refuse disposal area. PAW -3 was established to monitor the quality and
quantity of water movement into the upstream (west) end of the backfilled channel. Monitoring
of this station was eliminated in 1999 with elimination of the diversion survey.
PAW -4: A dip sample from an alluvial well located to the north of and adjacent to the
Purgatoire River approximately 100 yards downstream of PAW -3. The well was established in
the backfilled channel during the diversion of the Purgatoire River. It was established to monitor
the quality and quantity of water movement into the downstream (east) end of the diversion.
Monitoring of this station was eliminated in 1999 with elimination of the diversion survey.
