Resource Number: 5RT3256
18. Address:
Management Data Form
Temporary Resource Number: MM7300
Lot: Block:
Addition:
19. Location/Access: From the junction of US Highway 40 and County Road 27, turn south and proceed about 8.7 miles
into the SW portion of Sec. 23 T5N R87W. Take a dirt road that goes east and northeast along western edge of
Twentymile Park. Travel approximately 3.1 miles to a two-track in sec. 7, T5N 86W that goes to the east. Take the two
track 200ft to the east and the site's center stake is approximately 20m east on this road along the south side.
111. NATURAL ENVIRONMENT/SITE CONDITION
20. General Description (should include both on site as well as geographical setting with aspect, landforms, vegetation,
soils, depositional environment, water, ground visibility):
Site 5RT3256 is a prehistoric lithic scatter/possible camp situated along a small finger ridge to the east and the base
of a side slope along the west side. A small unnamed intermittent drainage runs along the north side. This small
drainage flows east 5.5km through Twentymile Park emptying into Fish Creek which is a permanent tributary of the
Yampa River. The site has at least 20cm of deposition in the center portions, indicated by the depth of the two-track
ruts, and along the western edge due to soils eroding down from the side slope. The soils are a light brown sandy silt
with a few cobbles scattered about. Along the perimeters to the site slopewashing has heavily eroded the soil
deposition. Ground surface visibility averaged around 50% and consisted of predominately of mixed grasses and
forbs, with some scattered areas of short sagebrush.
This site measures 160m (SW-NE) x 130m (SE-NW). Observed artifacts consisted of 30+ pieces of lithic debitage,
three manos, two stone tools, five metate fragments, and one piece of fire-cracked rock (FCR). One piece of metate
fragment had ochre residue on it. Debitage consisted of tertiary and secondary flakes. Material types are
predominately Kremmling chert and some other chert. Flaked stone tools include one biface tip of Kremmling chert
and one end scraper. Artifacts were observed in the two-track ruts indicating potential for intact buried cultural
material. Several artifacts showed signs of burning indicating this site served as a camp used for prossibly hunting
and faunal processing.
21. Soil depth (cm) and description: sandy silt brown sediments overlying more clayey light gray alluvial sediments;
20+cm of deposition indicated in the two-track ruts.
22. Condition
a. Architectural /Structural
❑ Excellent
❑ Good
❑ Fair
❑ Deteriorated
❑ Ruin
b. Archaeological/Paleontological
❑ Undisturbed
Light disturbance
❑ Moderate disturbance
F-1 Heavy disturbance
❑ Total disturbance
23. Describe condition: Most of the site's edges (except for the west side) have slopewashing which has eroded away
the surface edges. A two-track bisects the northern portion of the site. The two-track appears to have been created by
use rather having ever been bladed, therefore causing minimal damage.
24. Vandalism: ❑Yes 0 No
Describe: There is a possibility that some surface collection has occurred, but no true evidence this has happened.
IV. NATIONAL/STATE REGISTER ELIGIBILITY ASSESSMENT
25. Context or Theme: Colorado Prehistory: A Context for the Northern Colorado River Basin, Reed and Metcalf 1999
26. Applicable National Register Criteria:
❑ A. Associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad pattern of our history
❑ B. Associated with the lives of persons significant in our past
❑ C. Embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, or that represent the work
of a master, or that possess high artistic values, or that represent a significant and distinguishable entity
whose components may lack individual distinction
D. Has yielded, or may be likely to yield, information important in history or prehistory
❑ Does not meet any of the National Register criteria
❑ Qualifies under exceptions A through G. List exception(s):
