Million Gallon Water Tank Geotechnical Investigations (MR10 -12
Site geotechnical investigations are required to support evaluation, design, and possible
future construction, operation, maintenance, and reclamation of a million gallon water tank to
supply water to the mine. Two sites are being investigated to determine suitability of the
bedrock. A total of twelve (12) holes will be drilled with six (6) being drilled at each site
option. If the bedrock at the first site is found to be appropriate for the tank, the other six (6)
holes will not be drilled. Appropriate cultural resources surveys for the proposed
geotechnical investigations have been completed and can be found on Map 2. Effects to
grouse habitat will be mitigated through the Wildlife Mitigation Plan developed in
conjunction with the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife.
The site geotechnical investigations will provide foundation and soils information for
evaluation and design of the million gallon tank and pump station. Site geotechnical
investigations for the proposed tank will involve completion of 12 shallow (approximately
10 -30 foot deep) geotechnical test holes around the possible tank sites. All 12 holes will be
within the PSCM permit area.
An all- terrain drill rig will be used to complete 4 -inch hollow -stem auger sample holes to
characterize foundation materials, assess depth to bedrock and groundwater conditions, and
to collect material samples for lab testing. All auger -holes will be backfilled with cuttings,
leveled, and hand - seeded with the approved rangeland seed mixture, on completion of
drilling and sampling.
MR10 -12 2.05.3 -E5 - 2 06/12
