• 5RT3072. One biface fragment made from cream colored Kremmling Chert with the
base missing. It measures 45mm wide by 75mm long. One lateral edge is serrated and the
overall quality and workmanship is very good.
EVALUATION OF RESEARCH
Based upon the current and previously conducted cultural inventories, the likelihood of
identifying cultural resources, prehistoric and historic, were considered likely for this project.
Results for this study were fairly consistent with the expectations. Sites tended to exist in areas
that were relatively accessible and near enough to reliable water sources. Surface visibility was
the only obstacle due to the time of year following a wet winter and significant snowmelt that
resulted in a thick vegetation cover. However, it was felt that with the number of opportunities to
view the surface and subsurface ground (rodent burrowing, animal trails, ant hills, road cuts and
eroded areas), any existing significant cultural material would be in evidence.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (MAC) conducted a Class III cultural resources
inventory for Peabody Energy's proposed Sage Creek conveyor line in Routt County, Colorado.
The project area is located entirely on private land, but it is associated with mining activities.
• Therefore, the project falls under the permitting authority of the DRMS.
The inventory resulted in the recordation of one historic road segment (5RT2974.2), the
revisit of five previously recorded sites, and the recording of three isolated finds. One prehistoric
site (5RT487) was originally evaluated as "need data" then reevaluated in 2002 with a portion of
the site being non - contributing. The conveyor line passes through this portion of the site and it is
concurred that this area is still non - contributing. For the current project it is also recommended
that all ground disturbing construction along the centerline be limited to 50ft along the southwest
side and 100ft on the northeast side. If this is not possible then the area of deposition should be
tested prior to construction, the line should be moved to the northeast, or no construction should
take place within the site area boundary.
No further work is recommended for the Sage Creek conveyor line as long as the above
recommendation is followed.
For Official Use Only: Disclosure of Site Locations Prohibited (43 CFR §7.18)
12
