Elbert County, Colorado

Drainage Basins: Running Creek, Kiowa Creek,
Comanche Creek, and West Bijou Creek

1.0 Introduction

The Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) has retained
Michael Baker Jr, Inc, to complete a hydrologic study of the
following four drainage basins in Western Elbert County: Running
Creek, Kiowa Creek, Comanche Creek, and West Bijou Creek.

This report provides background on the hydrologic analysis of the
above four drainage basins. It is supported by the hydrologic
supporting computation packet.

2.0 Background Information

Elbert County is currently not a participating member of the National
Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Therefore, a Flood Insurance Study
(FIS) has never been completed for the county. No other hydrologic
studies were used as background in the preparation of this report.

The studied drainage basins flow in a northerly direction and
eventually outfall into the South Platte River All four drainage basins
have downstream limits at the northern corporate boundary of Elbert
County. Discharges downstream of the Elbert County corporate limits
were not analyzed as part of this study.

IOO-year peak discharges were determined for every "major" tributary
found in the four drainage basins described above For the purposes of
this study, a major tributary is defined as any flooding source assigned
a name on the USGS 7.5" Quad map. Table I lists the major
tributaries found in each of the four drainage basins.
