Total acreage estimates provided by Mr. John Schwartz of the
Bureau of Land Management, per RGDSS Surface Water, Blanca Wildlife Management Area
Memorandum, H dros here, Au ust, 2000.
The amount of acreage supplied by surface or ground water within each wildlife area is
believed to be relatively constant over the five-year period (1991 through 1995).
However, the general practice may be to rotate the acreage supplied with a water source.
The Blanca Wildlife Area boundaries were not identified, however, the average water
supplies are estimated to be 6,500 acre-feet per year by United States Bureau of Land
Management personnel associated with the area, as described in RGDSS Surface Water
Blanca Wildlife Management Area Memorandum, Hydrosphere, August, 2000.
Consumptive use estimates for wildlife wetland areas were estimated by staff at Leonard
Rice Consulting Water Engineers, Inc. for the Colorado Division of Wildlife as outlined
in the San Luis Valley Water Resource Investigation Final Report, October 1990. Much
of the information in that report was based on previous studies and reports of
consumptive use in the basin including:
• Consumptive Use and Water Requirements in New Mexico, Blaney and Hanson,
1965
• Rio Grande Joint Investigation, Upper Rio Grande, Blaney, et al, 1938
• Evapotranspiration of Phreatophytes in the San Luis Va11eX, Fredrick L. Charles,
1987
• Hydrophyte evaporation measurements by the Soil Conservation Service, 1936
Average monthly consumptive use was estimated for three wetland categories: lake
evaporation, phreatophytes, and hydrophytes. Table 14 shows the estimated average
consumptive use by category.
C:\Documents and Settings\ckf.DWR\My Documents\AppendA_culoss.doc Septei~bd>52o'~~099
