2. Prepare Data for StateCU
Historical monthly diversions for the Consumptive and Uses and Losses analysis were
extracted from the StateMod historic diversion (*.ddh) file. The values were digitized
from the Annual Rio Grande Compact Commission Reports.
Fish and Wildlife
There are fifteen federal, state, or private wildlife areas within the Rio Grande Basin,
shown in Table 12. These lands are managed for a variety of wildlife purposes. Many of
the wildlife areas are not known to divert a significant amount of surface water or ground
water, as noted in the table, and are not included in the Fish and Wildlife category.
However, several areas in the San Luis Valley use surface or ground water to irrigate
crops, maintain wetlands, and replace evaporation in lakes and ponds. This section
describes the approach and results of estimating the consumptive use of non-agricultural
lands located within wetlands areas. Consumptive use of agricultural lands in these areas
is included with the crop consumptive use estimates performed for the entire Rio Grande
Basin, as described in the Historic Crop Consumptive Use Report, Leonard Rice
Consulting Water Engineers, Inc., October 2000.
Table 12
Lands in the Rio Grande Basin Managed for Wildlife Purposes

Wildlife Area
Land Owner Significant
Water Use?
Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge USFWS Yes
Monte Vista National Wildlife Refu e USFWS Yes
Saguache Park Wildlife Area State of Colorado No
Blanca Wildlife Mana ement Area BLM Yes
Russell Lakes State Wildlife Area State of Colorado Yes
Rio Grande State Wildlife Area State of Colorado Yes
Mishak Lakes Private No
San Luis Lakes USBR No
Coller Wildlife Area State of Colorado No
Sego Springs Wildlife Area State of Colorado No
Hot Creek Wildlife Area State of Colorado No
La Garita Wildlife Area USFWS No
La Jara Reservoir Wildlife Area State of Colorado No
La Jara Wildlife Area State of Colorado No
Great Sand Dunes National Park NPS Yes
Source: RGDSS Land Use Mapping
USFWS =United States Fish and Wildlife Service; BLM= Bureau of Land Management;
USBR =United States Bureau of Reclamation; NPS =National Park Service
C:\Documents and Settings\ckf.DWR\My Documents\AppendA_culoss.doc Septer~bdr32o'~~099
