-4-

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

the channel beneath the bridge was excavated to improve the
flood water carrying capacity of the bridge.

The three (3) mile levee system was constructed west of town
along the right overbank of Kiowa Creek floodplain. The
South end of the levee is tied into high ground
approximately 3500 feet South of County Road "P". At County
Road "P" the road was elevated to correspond with the top of
the levee to minimize human intervention during times of
flood. At County Road "P" the levee proceeds Northerly to
the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks where a closure
structure with stop logs is constructed. The closure
structure. when closed with stop logs installed across the
tracks, prevents floodwaters from entering the Town during
high flows. When the logs are installed across the tracks
all train traffic along this route must cease. During
periods when no floods are predicted the stop logs are
removed and stored adjacent to the railroad tracks at the
closure. From the railroad tracks, the levee proceeds
northerly to the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 where
similar closure structure is constructed. This road closure
structure uses stop logs stored nearby in the Town's
maintenance shop. During periods when no floods are
predicted, the highway closure will remain open for
traffic. At the U.S. Highway 6 intersection, the levee
continues Northerly and ties-in to the eastbound lane
embankment of U.S. Interstate 76.

Erosion protection was provided to the Burlington Northern
Railroad under the BNRR bridge and at the east and west ends
of the 700 foot railroad fail section which is 200 feet west
of closure No.1. Certain sections of the levee embankment
have erosion protection.
