COLORADO <br /> <br />February 1966 <br /> <br />In March 1965 the Region 7 office of the Bureau of Reclamation <br /> <br />released its Reconnaissance Report on the Upper South Platte Unit. <br /> <br />Colorado. A copy of that report is attached. On June 16. 1965. the <br /> <br />City of Denver and downstream areas suffered extensive damages caused <br /> <br />by a severe flood on the South Platte River. That flood originated <br /> <br />on Plum Creek. southeast and upstream from Denver. and caused widespread <br /> <br />damage to Castle Rock and in the Plum Creek valley before entering the <br /> <br />South Platte River. Total damage from the flood has been estimated at <br /> <br />more than $460 million of which about $300 million occurred in the <br /> <br />Denver metropolitan area. <br /> <br />As a consequence of the flood. tremendous public support was <br /> <br />aroused for the immediate construction. by the Corps of Engineers. of <br /> <br />the potential Chatfield Dam and Reservoir on the South Platte River <br /> <br />immediately downstream from the mouth of Plum Creek. The Chatfield <br /> <br />Dam and Reservoir had been authorized by the Eightieth Congress in the <br /> <br />Flood Control Act of 1950. However. the project was never constructed <br /> <br />due primarily to the lack of sufficient local support. The Chatfield <br /> <br />Reservoir could have contained the Plum Creek flood and prevented the <br />
