Highlights of GCMRC activities: <br /> <br />. Remote Sensing in the Grand Canyon: A photo of the Grand Canyon appeared <br />on the cover of the February 2004 issue of Photog ram metric Engineering & <br />Remote Sensing, the premier publication of the American Society for <br />Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. The explanation of the cover image <br />describes a remote sensing mission conducted by the USGS - Grand Canyon <br />Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC) in conjunction with Photo Science, <br />Inc. to collect high-resolution color aerial photography of II sites throughout the <br />Grand Canyon. Plans for Monitoring and Research on the Colorado River: USGS scientists <br />participated in a meeting of the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management <br />Program's Technical Work Group (TWG) in Phoenix, AZ, February 2-3. Among <br />important items discussed were preliminary recommendations to the Adaptive <br />Management Work Group regarding river flow patterns for 2005 as well as new <br />kinds of experimentation following the current two year experimental operations <br />approved by the Secretary ofInterior in December of2002. USGS - Grand <br />Canyon Monitoring and Research Center Chief Jeff Lovich presented information <br />regarding the development of a new 5 year strategic plan for the Science Center as <br />well as timelines for development of more detailed plans for monitoring and <br />research activities in the Colorado River ecosystem in Glen Canyon National <br />Recreation Area and Grand Canyon National Park. Saltcedar Paper Published:USGS cooperator, Theodore Kennedy with the <br />Northern Arizona University-Colorado Plateau Cooperative Ecosystems Studies <br />Unit, published an article in the latest issue of the journal Freshwater Biology <br />entitled, Saltcedar (Tamarix ramosissima) invasion alters organic matter <br />dynamics in a desert stream. Freshwater Biology 49 (I) 65-76.]. A photo of the <br />study site was featured on the cover of this issue.
