~

001388

.

.

REPORT OF THE WATER RESOURCES DIVISION

U. S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

July 1, 1966

Runoff was well below normal during May and June in all except the
southwestern part of the State where near normal conditions prevailed.
Near record low streamflow is expected for the period April to September,
particularly in the Arkansas and South Platte River basins. Snowmelt
peaks occurred on most streams during the first half of May, which is
typical for years with low snowpack.

The Bureau of Mines and the Atomic Energy Commission deepened their
Yellow Creek No. 1 Test Hole to the base of the oil shale in May. D. L.
Coffin and F. A. Welder spent the week of May 23 running hydrologic tests
on the completed hole. The Duck Creek Test Hole was begun on June 21.
More extensive testing is planned for the Duck Creek Test Hole.

Arkansas Valley model analyses were supplied to the State Engineer's
Office in May. The analyses depicted changes in river gain and loss
caused by pumping wells at different distances from the river in different
parts of the valley.

During the week of June 13, a mass measurement of electrical conduc-
tivity of ground water was made at operating wells in the Arkansas River
Valley between Pueblo and Coolidge, Kansas. Very little data were obtained
in the area below John Martin Reservoir as most of the pumps were shut down
because of the availability of reservoir water.

A field office has been opened in Alamosa to begin water-resources
studies in the San Luis Valley. Philip A. Emery, geologist, transferred
to Alamosa from the Geological Survey office in Lincoln, Nebraska, on
June 29 and will be in charge of the office. A. J. Boettcher of the Denver
Ground Water office will transfer to Alamosa and 2 or 3 others will be
recruited to work on the project.

An intensive study of the South Platte Valley below Denver will be
started this month. Donald R. Albin is the project chief. The work will
be done from the Denver office.

The Quality of water subdistrict office in Denver has been converted
to a Project Office for Colorado. There will be no change in personnel or
activities of the unit.

1
