Evans <br />Director, CWCB <br /> <br />To: Randy Seaholm <br /> <br />From: Tom Browning <br /> <br />Date: March 8, 1999 Draft <br /> <br />Re: Recommended Guidelines for Ring Levees <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />Per our conversation on March 4, 1999 I am providing you with engineering information <br />for the design and construetion of ring levees around ponds, The purpose of the ring levees is to <br />prevent non-native fish species from being transported from stock ponds into the mainstem of the <br />Colorado River (and other streams) during high water or flooding events, <br /> <br />The guidelines and eriteria provided below are generally consistent with the V,S, Army <br />Corps of Engineers publication entitled "Design and Construction of Levees" (EM 1110-2-1913), <br /> <br />TECHNICAL GUIDELINES <br /> <br />General Considerations: The term levee is defined as an embankment whose primary <br />purpose is to furnish flood protection from intermittent or seasonal high water, A levee may only <br />be subjeet to water loading for a few hours, days, or weeks out of the year, A ring levee is one <br />that completely eneircles the area or feature that is subject to inundation from all directions, The <br />principal causes of levee failure are overtopping, surface erosion, internal erosion (piping), and <br />slides within the levee embankment or the foundation soils. <br /> <br />General Design Procedure: The general procedure for levee design is outlined in Table <br />I, The tasks should be performed by a registered professional engineer with expertise in the <br />speeifie discipline related to the design task, <br />
