Colorado StAte Veterans Nursin~ Home
Rifle. ColoradQ.

I. Title
Water Conservation Usage Plan

II. Water SUI;l91y Sour",,,
City of Rifle

III. Proposed Pro~ram
The goal of this program should result in a final reduction
of at least 10% water usage throughout all state facilities.

IV. Annual workplan
Outdoors

The water usage for outdoor watering of the lawns,
shrubs, trees and shrubs is controlled through an
automated sprinkler system which allows watering of
these areas only late at night or early in the morning
when water usage is down and evaporation rate of the
water into the atmosphere is down because of the lower
temperatures.
All stations are preset to reduce over watering or
forgetful watering which in turn causes run off of
excess water and saturation of foliage.
A policy in the Physical Plant department has been
established about the cancellation of the water
programs when the weather is such that water it not
required
Another measure to reduce amount of water used
outdoors is through the use of power racking and
aerating of the lawn area so that the water may soak
into the soil instead of running into waste areas.
Every year all sprinklers are checked for proper
operation for coverage and direction to reduce waste of
water by watering sidewalks and streets.
Every spring the sprinkler system is pressure
checked with air to detect leaks by station from supply
line to control valves. The lines are then check by
visible means by walk~ng all sprinkler lines and
checking for leaks. If a visible leak is detected then
sprinkler heads are plugged and then a pressure check
is run. If an unusually amount of run off is noted in a
particular area then the line is pressure checked
without a visible detection_
Areas which show runoff by the detection of
erosion is either concreted so that the water can be
diverted to an area in which the water can be used, or
lawn is planted or an erosion prevention type of fabric
is used along with rip rap to help prevent the erosion
and water wasted by run off.
A pressure reducing valve has been installed to
reduce the pressure going to sprinkler system and also
