Walcher
Executive Director
Rod Kuharich
CWCB Director
Dan McAuliffe
eputy Director
The Rio Grande Water Conservation District (District) has requested non-
reimbursable funding in the amount of $200,000 to participate with the Bureau of
Rclamation (BOR) in the rehabilitation (re-drill and re-locate) of several Closed Basin
project wells. (Please see attached project description and map.)
Staff Comments
The Closed Basin project, and its subsequent efficient operations, are considered
to be of statewide concern and importance since the purpose of the project assists the
State of Colorado in meeting its' commitment to the States of New Mexico and Texas
under the 1939 Rio Grande Compact. The rehabilitation of the project wells will allow
the BOR's project operations to meet the water quality and quantity requirements set
forth in the Rio Grande compact. For these reasons, this project should be considered as
addressing an issue of "statewide impact or importance". The District's funding request
is for less than 45% of the total project cost. The BOR is continuing to seaxch for cost
sharing opportunities to be combined with federal funds to enable the project to reach a
more sustainable and reliable level of production.
)
Flood Protection • Water Project Planning and Financing • Stream and Lake Protection
Water Supply Protection .
