COLORADO WATERSHED PROTECTION Fi_JND
VANDIFORD DITCH DIVERSION RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT FINAL REPORT
by
NORTH FORK RIVER IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION
Febnian- 15, 2008
PROJECT TITLE: Vandiford Ditch Diversion Reconstruction Project
PROJECT START DATE: July 15, 2007
PROJECT COMPLETION DATE: December 8, 2007
FT_]NDING: TOTAL BUDGET (including in-kind): $84,586
TOTAL CWPF GRANT: $9,800
TOTAL MATCH ACCRUED: $74,786
BUDGET REVISIONS: None
TOTAL CASH EXPENDITURES: $59,295
SUMMARY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
The existing diversion, consisting of a gravel "push-up" dam and an open ditch without a
head gate were replaced by moving the ditch intake several feet upstream, constn~cting a
headwall and installing a head gate, and piping the first 100 feet of the ditch. This made it
possible to utilize the river gradient and an existing bedrock shelf in the river and boulder
placement in the stream to divert flow towards the head gate. This minimized the amount
of in-stream diversion constn~ction needed to insure that the fill decree of water can be
directed to the head gate. The work allows fish migration and safe passage of boats and
provides a full decree of water without building push-up dams. Tlus prevents the need to
dry up the river in low flow periods and prevents washing out the ditch during peak
flows. Rock veins and streambanlc vegetation will protect stream bai~lcs from erosion.
A recently completed conservation easement that encompasses the diversion area
ternunates an in-stream gravel mine just below the diversion. The combination of this
project and the conservation easement will improve water quality by the reduction of
sediment.
