Gunnison River Basin
Gunnison, Colorado 8.28.03
50
Municipal, agricultural, recreation, development
Ensure the SWSI process is inclusive : The Gunnison Basin has a wide variety of
interests and communities, and it is important to involve everyone in the SWSI
process.
Address concerns regarding trans-basin transfers : Attendees expressed concerns
about the Front Range growth and its demand on the Gunnison River basin?s
water. Water issues within the basin should be addressed first. Many expressed
a desire to keep basin water in the basin ? ?not one drop? for interests outside of
the Gunnison basin.
Take into account the information already developed on the Gunnison River
basin?s water : The SWSI process should look at past studies, current planning
and projected projects to make the most efficient use of time, money and energy.
This data should be incorporated into any larger plan that is developed.
Better water management is needed: There is a need to better manage the water
already in the basin for better efficiency. Better water management includes
improving and enhancing existing reservoirs, building new storage, examining
water quality issues, maintaining water for fishing and recreational uses,
coordination with the federal government, and groundwater management.
Address concerns about funding proposed solutions : Water projects have been
proposed in the past and have been held up by lack of funding. Funding solutions
should be considered for recommended projects.
More information gathering and education is needed: The SWSI process should
attempt to gather important information on water demand and growth in the
Gunnison River basin before suggesting solutions. Additionally, a public
education effort focused on water use and conservation is needed.
