Publish information that will be used by those involved at the Technical
Roundtable.
Put on the website documentation about water from other studies?1972 state
study, 1982 Corp of Engineers study, CSU, CU and School of Mines information.
Reference studies found on www.gmugpathfinder.org
Announce meetings earlier to increase meeting attendance.
The comments below recap the concerns, issues and questions that were raised at the
basin?s Public Information Meeting. These are general summaries of what was said,
grouped by key theme, and are not verbatim quotes from the participants. The
suggestions, comments and questions documented here will be incorporated into the SWSI
study process. This public input is greatly appreciated, as it will help guide the SWSI study
team as the process moves forward. The SWSI team will seek to answer any questions
raised at these meetings, and will include these answers as part of the SWSI final report.
Ensure the SWSI process is inclusive :
±
Environmental issues should be addressed as part of the Technical Roundtables.
±
There may be a disconnect if the focus of SWSI is on water supply within each
basin, when it should consider water needs and supply throughout the entire
state. The people in the Gunnison River basin are not the only ones who have an
interest in Gunnison water. Everyone should come together with a mutual interest
in the basin?s water.
±
The Technical Roundtables should involve parties who are interested in the basin,
but don?t live within it, so everyone understands what outside parties think and
how much they understand the basin?s water needs and issues.
±
The North Fork of the Gunnison River should not be ignored during the SWSI
process.
±
Club 20 has done a great job organizing Western Slope interests.
±
To increase SWSI?s credibility, it was su ggested that public involvement with two-
way communication be increased. SWSI should not only listen, but also engage
the public.
Address concerns regarding trans-basin transfers:
±
It is critical to understand all existing water use in the basin. Most usage is non-
consumptive, meaning a portion of the water is returned to the source
downstream after being used once. Because of the reuse of water in this basin,
water usage is very efficient. Trans-mountain diversions are 100% consumptive.
Many people will be deprived of water?s multiple uses if water is moved out of the
Gunnison River basin.
±
Gunnison River basin residents are concerned with keeping water from the
Gunnison River basin in the basin: ?Not one drop for Denver growth.?
±
There is no doubt this basin could use a reservoir, but not at the price of
delivering water over the mountain.
±
It is felt that the main purpose of this study is to justify moving water from the
Western Slope to the Front Range.
