Chemical Quali ty

The Missouri Basin chemical quality progrllll includes investigations
Of both surface and ground waters. At the end of the quarter, 61 quality sta-
stations were discontinued during the quarter: (1) Two Medicine River near
Canal near Dupuyer, Mont. Preparation, review, and revision of chemical quality
sections of ground-water resources reports were continued. Preparation of a
preliminary report on chemical quality and sedimentation of surface waters in
the Grand River Basin, South Dakota was in progress. Basic data on chemical
quality for Devils Lake area, N. Dak., through the 1956 water year, were COlll-
piled and distributed. In addition, a S\llllmary of data for Shadehill Reservoir,
S. Dak. area for the 1956 water year was forwarded to the Bureau of Reclamation.

The GeologiCal Survey9s irrigation network progr8lll, which included
investigations of the chemical quality of surface waters at 3 main stem and
11 tributary stations was continued, and the assembly of data for the 1955 water
year was nearly completed.

Chemical quality data for Lake Traverse, S. Dak., and for Lake
Ashtabula and Homme Reservoir, both in N. Dak., whic h were obtained in October
Big Hole, Gallatin, Marias, Willow Creek, Yellowstone, White, James, Niobrara,
Platte, and Kansas River drainage basins; and studies of variable hydraulic
parameters for sed:iJllent transport for Middle toup River near Ilunning, Nebr.

Sedimentation investigations conducted as a part of the Departmental
Wind River program were reduced in scope as follows: (1) Poison Creek near
Shoshoni, Wyo., discontinued; (2) Wind River at Riverton,Vyo., changed from
dai1y to monthly observations; (3) Popo Agie River at Riverton, Wyo., Changed
