<br />The Deputy Director participated in the third
<br />session of the Water Problems Committee as
<br />chairman of the U. S. Delegation. Other members
<br />of this d~legation were Messrs. D. V. McCarthy,
<br />Bureau of Reclamation, Department of the Interior,
<br />and A. Cywin, Water Quality Research, Environmental
<br />Protection Agency. The meeting was held in
<br />Geneva, Switzerland June l4-l8.Subjects discussed
<br />by representatives of the twenty assembled nations
<br />included (a) methods for determining economic
<br />losses' caused by pollution of water bodies;
<br />(b) optimum methods for combined treatment of
<br />sewage and industrial wastes; (c) use and effective-
<br />ness of economic incentives for prevention of
<br />pollution at the source; (d) standard"methods for
<br />cost evaluation of industrial effluent treatment;
<br />(e) seminar on pollution of water bodies arising
<br />from the use of poisonous chemicals in agriculture
<br />and forestry; (f) methods and organization of
<br />water planning management; and (g) studies relating
<br />to balances of water resources and needs.
<br />
<br />The meeting was followed by a study tour involving
<br />water resources development on the Rhone River in
<br />France. Institutional arrangements for planning,
<br />construction and operation of water treatment
<br />plants, navigation structures, power development
<br />and irrigation projects were described and an
<br />inspection made of projects contructed or under
<br />construction.
