TASK NO: 12

Botanical Resource Studies

SUBTASK NO: lZa

Botanical Characterization

PURPOSE:

The purpose of the botanical characterization subtask is to
identify and describe the plant communities in the project area,
for use in both terrestrial habitat and botanical effects
assessments. Identification and mapping of plant communities has
been studied during previous studies conducted for the NCWCD.

APPROACH:

A two-step approach will be used to identify and describe project
area plant community types.

1) Identification. -- Plant community types will be identified on
aerial photographs of the project area and mapped on a
Geographic Information System (GIS). This step will be done
in conjunction with the Habitat Inventory Subtask (15b) of the
Terrestrial Resources Studies (Task No. 15). Each patch or
polygon of a given plant community will be given a unique
number and its respective acreage calculated. The final map
will show the distribution of plant community types in the
project area.

2) Description. -- Description of each project area plant
community will require information on species composition,
cover and dominance; associated physiographic features,
relative importance; and potential response to disturbance.

,

6168a

12-2
